How the Special Olympics Keeps Its Story Consistent Across 177 Countries with Sydnye White

"Storytelling is local. But we are a global brand, so we do need consistency — and enough flexibility that everything can be used at a local level, because what resonates in China is not the same thing that resonates in Kenya."

How the Special Olympics Keeps Its Story Consistent Across 177 Countries with Sydnye White

Special Olympics operates in 177 countries and hosts nearly 10,000 events a year — so how do you keep one brand narrative consistent across all of that scale? Sydnye White, VP of Content and Storytelling at Special Olympics, joins Rain to break down exactly how her team does it, and the two gaps she's spent eight years trying to close: the logistical gap between a global headquarters and grassroots programs with no communications support, and the awareness gap between what people think Special Olympics is and what it actually does.

Sydnye and Rain dig into what makes brand storytelling work at that scale — surveying what resonates locally without losing one coherent message, empowering athletes to tell their own stories in their own voice, and the guardrails her team puts in place to protect athletes while still telling honest, sometimes difficult stories. They also get into authenticity in storytelling more broadly, from unconscious bias behind the camera to what Sydnye calls the macaroni and cheese test for getting cultural details right.

The conversation closes on something every creative person deals with: burnout. Eight years into a demanding, always-on role, Sydnye shares how she protects her own creative well — walks in nature, community, sleep, and her personal mantra to follow the fun.

In this episode, you will learn how to:

  • Close the gap between the story people think you tell and the story you're actually living out

  • Let the people in your story speak for themselves instead of only being the subject of someone else's narration

  • Set one clear brand message with enough flexibility for it to land differently in every country you serve

  • Build guardrails before you publish so you protect the people you're telling stories about, not just the brand

  • Treat rest and community as creative infrastructure — not as luxuries you earn after the real work is done

“Storytelling is local. But we are a global brand, so we do need consistency — and enough flexibility that everything can be used at a local level, because what resonates in China is not the same thing that resonates in Kenya.”
